The high-stakes political drama of The Diplomat is set to continue with its third season, premiering globally on Netflix with the release date of October 16, 2025. The Diplomat Season 3 installment will see the return of Emmy-nominated star Keri Russell as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler, with the cast also welcoming former The West Wing star Bradley Whitford to the series.

“I was thrilled when I heard that Debora [Cahn, creator, showrunner, and executive producer] was interested in me doing something,” Bradley Whitford told Tudum, the Netflix-owned blog capturing the latest on the streamer’s series. “I had no idea what it was, but I love the show. I was jealous of the writing on this show. I love Keri. I love Rufus. And I hear Allison Janney is good at acting, too. It’s an amazing cast.”

In our review of Season 2, our critic said: “With a transfixing cast and intrigue that carries into the last minutes of the season, The Diplomat Season 2 is the return of a political drama series on any platform.”

What is The Diplomat Season 3 about?

Season 3 picks up immediately following the explosive conclusion of the last season. After accusing Vice President Grace Penn of a terrorist plot and revealing her own aspirations for the VP role, Kate Wyler is faced with a new reality: the president is dead, and Grace Penn is now the leader of the free world.

As Kate grapples with this new political landscape, her husband Hal continues his campaign to land her the vice presidency. The new season will explore Kate’s newfound freedom in a role she never wanted, her increasingly complex friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, and her unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn.
