Retrofuturistic Sci-Fi Horror Game, Routine, Finally Has a Release Window

During Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live, indie game publisher Raw Fury and developer Lunar Software announced that their highly anticipated sci-fi horror game, Routine, will launch in late 2025. The first-person game is set on an abandoned lunar base where players must investigate their surroundings and survive against unknown threats.

What is Routine about?

Set in a retro-analogue future inspired by 80s technology, Routine puts you on a lunar base to find out why it has gone quiet. As you search for answers, you will come face to face with an enemy that sees you as the main threat. The discoveries you make only lead to deeper unknowns.

Space horror remains one of the best subgenres, and it’s fantastic to see the detail that Lunar Software has gone to to bring it to life. In the release window trailer, the blend of VHS footage, static, and gameplay works to deliver the game’s period and atmosphere perfectly.

While we are used to space horror games investing heavily in the Dead Space aesthetic, Routine stands out thanks to its color palette, sound, oh, and the robot enemies of course. Add in snapping pictures while a horrific voice starts moving through the damp hallway you’re stuck in, and well, this is just nightmare fuel.

Game Features

  • Investigate a Retro-Analogue Future: Roam through contrasting sectors of the Lunar station, from abandoned malls to deteriorating living quarters.
  • Immersive Design and Gameplay: Full-body awareness, diegetic audio, and a minimal UI create a gripping and atmospheric experience.
  • Explore Using Tools: Your Cosmonaut Assistance Tool (C.A.T.) is vital for accessing critical terminals, navigating the environment, and identifying clues.
  • Survive the Unknown: Run, hide, or attempt to defend against threats, using the C.A.T. as a last resort.

What is the Routine release date?

While the game is technically still without a release date, publisher Raw Fury did give us some insight with the latest trailer. Routine will release in late 2025 on Xbox platforms and PC via Steam, and will be a day-one Game Pass title. A release window, sure, but at least we know we’re getting this retrofuturistic sci-fi nightmare this year.
