Prime Video today announced the renewal of its acclaimed docuseries, Shiny Happy People, for a second season. Shiny Happy People Season 2 is titled Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War. The new season will premiere on July 23, 2025. It will shift the focus from the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) to explore the Evangelical teen pop culture that emerged in the U.S. during the 1990s and 2000s, and the broader efforts to leverage earnest faith for extensive influence.

The series comes from Executive Producers Blye Faust and Cori Shepherd, the team behind the first season, Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, which was the #1 most-viewed documentary series on Prime Video. Blye Faust, Cori Shepherd, and Nicole Newnham serve as executive producers for the new season, alongside Lauren Andrade, Olivia Crist, and Eric Cook. Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Story Force Entertainment, and Chick Entertainment.

The first season of Shiny Happy People took the Duggar family as a starting point for a serious discussion about the rise of the post-Reagan Christian right. The docuseries used TLC’s number one family, their secrets, and the abuse to explore the insidious ways that religion was used in the Duggar household to perpetuate cycles of servitude and abuse among the Duggar children.

Still, in the latter half of the season, Shiny Happy People began to explore the larger implications of the Duggar family’s success and ultimately the push toward politics. In Shiny Happy People Season 2, the docuseries will further explore Evangelicalism and its effect on teens. But more importantly, the messaging was tailor-made for them.

Is Prime Video’s Shiny Happy People Season 2 still about the Duggar Family and IBLP?

No, but also yes.

While the Duggars and their TLC series fit into the larger era of Christian pop culture, this documentary switches gears to focus on something in the same realm, but beyond reality TV. Directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmakers Nicole Newnham and Cori Shepherd, Shiny Happy People Season 2 investigates the controversial organization Teen Mania. Once America’s most significant youth ministry, Teen Mania attracted millions through its popular stadium shows, “Acquire the Fire.”

The series aims to blend millennial nostalgia with examining stadium events filled with teens performing purity oaths and embarking on global missions. However, the series also uncovers a darker aspect beneath the wholesome youth group facade, detailing a high-pressure system of spiritual bootcamps, role-playing scenarios, and psychological control, all directed by a charismatic leader with expanding ambitions.

Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War will release exclusively on Prime Video on July 23, 2025.
