Prime Video today unveiled first look images and teaser art for Butterfly, an upcoming spy-thriller series starring and executive produced by Daniel Dae Kim. Based on the BOOM! Studios’ graphic novel series created by Arash Amel, the six-episode series is set to debut on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.

“Butterfly is the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply,” Kim said. “I couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled, both in front of and behind the camera, and I’m grateful to Ken Woodruff, Boom! Studios, 3AD, Amazon, and everyone else who helped bring it to life.”

Butterfly is described as a character-driven spy thriller that delves into complex family dynamics amidst the treacherous world of global espionage. The narrative centers on David Jung (Kim), an enigmatic and highly unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea.

His life is shattered when the repercussions of an impossible decision from his past return to haunt him, leading to him being pursued by Rebecca (Hardesty), a deadly, sociopathic young agent, and Caddis, the sinister spy organization she works for, both intent on his demise.

Production Details for Butterfly

Kim’s production company, 3AD, developed the series under their first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Kitao Sakurai directed the first two episodes of the series.

  • Showrunner & Co-Creator Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist, Gotham)
  • Co-Creator Steph Cha
  • Executive producers include Ken Woodruff and Steph Cha; Daniel Dae Kim and John Cheng for 3AD; Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for BOOM! Studios; and Arash Amel for The Amel Company
  • Adam Yoelin serves as Co-EP for BOOM! Studios.

3AD was established by Daniel Dae Kim in 2015 to produce premier content for TV, film, and digital media. Committed to storytelling featuring characters and cultures traditionally underrepresented, 3AD-produced projects include the hit series The Good Doctor (ABC / Sony) and the critically acclaimed documentary film Bad Axe. Led by Daniel and Head of Development John Cheng, the company is currently under a first-look TV deal with Amazon Studios.

Steph Cha is the author of Your House Will Pay, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the California Book Award, and the Juniper Song crime trilogy. She’s a critic whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, where she served as noir editor and is the current series editor of the Best American Mystery & Suspense anthology. A native of the San Fernando Valley, she lives in Los Angeles with her family.
