REVIEW: ‘Witch Watch’ Episode 6 — “Under the Lovers’ Tree”

Witch Watch Episode 6 delves deeper into the main characters’ relationships and pasts and shows how surprisingly well developed they are. It also features more goofy hijinks that elevate the experience and aren’t the sole focus.

The episode starts with Nico (Rina Kawaguchi) giving a student a charm to help her feel confident when confessing her love to someone. This prompts the topic of love throughout the episode, with Nico thinking about her feelings toward Morihito (Ryota Suzuki). Unfortunately, as he gets more popular with the ladies with each passing day and does not show any romantic feelings toward her, she’s understandably disgruntled.

However, aside from leaving passive-aggressive comments hinting at her feelings, she still does nothing about it until  Kanshi (Kôhei Amasaki), who’s been watching them, intervenes and gives her love advice. This leads to a goofy attempt to get Morihito to fall for Nico by using Kanshi’s wind powers to blow her hair in a way that makes her look more attractive.

This only results in Nico looking awful, and Morihito flexes his athletic prowess by saving a teacher’s papers that got caught in the wind without even looking at them. This makes him even more popular, and Nico more disgruntled.

Love is one of the main topics in Witch Watch Episode 6.

The first half of the episode sees Nico being vulnerable and surprisingly self-aware of her relationship with Morihito. She’s aware she always gives him trouble and that he probably thinks of her as a sister rather than anything else, which is a fair assumption.

Kanshi notices this and, as a good friend, tells Nico not to lose faith and tells her to confess because Morihito still considers her a precious person to him. This exchange between the two reveals how strong the three are as main characters, as while the goofy moments may hide it, they are actually thoughtful and considerate of each other.

On the other hand, the wacky scene earlier succeeded in being incredibly humorous, and Bibury Animation Studios showcased engaging, fluid animation through Morihito’s intense athleticism. Like previous episodes, and in keeping with the series’ true nature, the episode also references Quintessential Quintuplets and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure in funny contextual ways that add to the humor.

Keigo Magami enters the series with Witch Watch Episode 6.

In the second half of Witch Watch Episode 6, Nico is harassed by love-hungry students who want her charms. Meanwhile, Morihito meets a new friend and new character called Keigo Magami, and they hit it off. However, as the character was only on screen for a very short time, not much is known about him yet, so whether he’s a friend or foe remains to be seen. As such, his introduction feels a little underwhelming.

Nico shrinks to escape her pursuers but falls into Morihito’s pocket and witnesses a girl’s failed attempt to confess her feelings for him. This failed confession forces both characters to think about how they truly feel about each other.

We see a flashback that reveals how Nico’s dad abandoned his family, but Morihito was always there to console her. It explains why Nico fell for him and proves that he’s always been considerate of her. The scene also reveals more about Nico’s past in an impactful way that seamlessly helps the episode’s narrative.

Witch Watch Episode 6 ends with a touching moment between the two leads, as they share lunch after recalling their past. Overall, the episode does a great job of balancing touching character moments and hilarious moments with goofy events. While not much happens for the overarching narrative, the episode remains entertaining regardless, and the introduction of a new character could change that soon.

Witch Watch Episode 6 is available now on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
