REVIEW: ‘Pepper Grinder’ Is A Hidden Treasure (PC)

Ahr Ech and Devolver Digital are unleashing Pepper Grinder onto the high seas of PC gaming. In its shortwave of gameplay, this platforming adventure promises excitement, challenge, and plenty of hidden treasures. In a world rife with maritime conflict, players take on the role of Pepper. This spirited treasure hunter’s fortunes take a dive after a tumultuous storm lands her on a mysterious island. What follows is a riveting escapade filled with narwhal-like creatures, stolen loot, and the trusty sidekick, Grinder.

Pepper Grinder marries traditional platforming mechanics with a unique drilling feature that adds depth—literally—to the gameplay. As players navigate a series of fast-paced levels, they’ll encounter a delightful blend of platforming challenges, combat encounters, and brain-teasing puzzles. With each level conquered, Pepper’s journey unveils exotic locales and hidden secrets across the island map. The game encourages exploration and replayability. Whether leaping across chasms, dodging enemy attacks, or solving intricate puzzles, players must utilize all of Pepper’s skills and abilities to emerge victorious.

Of course, no adventure would be complete without a few challenges along the way. From thorny brambles and bubbling lava pits to gun-toting Narlings, Pepper Grinder is full of danger at every turn. With only five hit points to spare, players must tread carefully. To compensate, players utilize purchasable armor gems and strategic maneuvering to survive the island’s many perils. The more treasures players collect, the more they can buy to improve their chances in the field.

Pepper Grinder

Pepper Grinder‘s most intriguing feature is its dynamic difficulty system. It eschews conventional easy-medium-hard modes in favor of customizable gameplay speeds. Players can adjust the game’s pace to suit their skill level. This allows for a tailored experience that strikes the perfect balance between challenge and enjoyment. Whether breezing through obstacles at breakneck speed or savoring the scenery at a leisurely pace, Pepper Grinder offers an experience that’s as engaging as it is accessible.

Visually, Pepper Grinder dazzles with its charming art design and vibrant environments. From lush jungles teeming with life to foreboding underwater caverns filled with danger, each locale is brought to life through art as much as music. Every level feels fresh and distinct building anticipation for what the game will throw at them next. The island’s sights and sounds will captivate players as they uncover its many secrets and hidden treasures.

Despite thoroughly enjoying my playthrough, there was a glaring issue. There is a notable discrepancy in gameplay experience between using a controller and a keyboard setup. Upon launching the game, the game encourages players to utilize a controller, a detail worth noting before gameplay. While the keyboard controls are functional, they lack the same fluidity and precision as a controller. This could pose a minor limitation for PC players. Personally, I question whether I would have been able to complete the game as swiftly without a controller. However, those who opt for plug-and-play with a controller may pleasantly find the transition seamless.

Pepper Grinder Gameplay

While the controls might be a hurdle, what sets Pepper Grinder apart is its refreshingly concise gameplay experience. Pepper Grinder offers a perfect balance of depth and accessibility for all players. Whether you’re a seasoned platforming veteran or a newcomer to the genre, Pepper Grinder‘s streamlined experience ensures that every moment is filled with excitement and adventure.

For the completionist, not all of the treasures are in plain sight, encouraging players to revisit levels to reach 100 percent. Whether you’re hunting for elusive gold coins, seeking out hidden caches of treasure, or mastering each level to perfection, there’s always something new to discover on Pepper’s swashbuckling adventure.

Pepper Grinder feels nearly perfect. As players follow Pepper on her quest to recover her treasure, they experience a thrilling adventure filled with excitement and challenge. Its short yet dynamic gameplay, coupled with simple yet impactful art design, creates an experience where each level feels fresh and distinct. The preference for a controller on PC may be a hurdle for some. However, overcoming it is well worth the journey through Pepper Grinder‘s short adventure.

Pepper Grinder is a treasure trove of excitement and charm, beckoning players to sail into its captivating world and embark on a thrilling adventure unlike any other.

Pepper Grinder is available now on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, Epic Games, and GOG.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
