In a genre often dominated by the exploits of valiant heroes and noble adventurers, Goblin Stone goes left. Set in a world where adventurers have nearly eradicated goblins and orcs, developer Orc Chop Games flips the script. Instead of adventures, players control a ragtag group of goblins seeking vengeance and survival. As players lead a band of goblins on a quest for redemption, they’ll navigate a world filled with danger, intrigue, and the occasional glimmer of hope.

At the heart of Goblin Stone is its stellar storytelling, flipping the script on traditional turn-based RPG narratives. The game opens with adventurers portrayed as aggressors, ruthlessly hunting down goblins without reason. This perspective shift immediately sets the tone for the game, creating an emotional connection with the player and instigating a desire to see the goblins succeed in their fight for survival.

Right away, it’s clear that Goblin Stone is focused on a unique player experience. This can be seen in its emphasis on permanent choices and consequences. From the outset, players are forced to make decisions that shape the fate of their goblin companions. Their choice leads to branching paths and unexpected outcomes. Whether choosing between different biomes or deciding the fate of captured enemies, every choice carries weight.

Goblin Stone Gameplay

In Goblin Stone, not all goblins are created equally. Throughout the story progression, players are introduced to a variety of goblin classes. From cunning scouts to brutish warriors, players can assemble a party of up to six goblins and customize their abilities to suit their playstyle. As the world continues to build, so does the world of Monsterfolk. As players fight back against the adventures, other members of the Monsterfolk join the goblin’s fight. Unlocked through the player’s own choices, it gives a much-needed weight to carry players from one mission to the next.

Combat in Goblin Stone is both tactical and satisfying. Even after a brief yet informative tutorial, defeat is inevitable. However, death is not a setback but a strategic element. In a genre notorious for punishing mistakes, Goblin Stone embraces the inherent chaos of its world., Goblin Stone uses goblin deaths as a means to progress and grow stronger. In combat, surviving goblins gain Fury every time a comrade falls gain extra damage. At times, a goblin’s death could mean they could provide the extra power to overcome the end of the battle. Further, goblin souls are essential in upgrading the Goblin Lair.

The Goblin Lair is this central hub that serves as the player’s headquarters. The lair provides essential functions such as storage, recruitment, and strategic planning. As players progress, they have the opportunity to customize the lair, unlocking new rooms and features to aid their quest for goblin supremacy. Each room in the lair actively contributes to the goblin’s journey. From the Ancestor’s Hall where goblin souls unlock new rooms, to the War Room, where adventurers assemble parties. More importantly, the lair adds to the ever-growing story of the goblin’s road to survival.

Beyond its engaging gameplay mechanics, Goblin Stone excels in its presentation. The hand-drawn art style brings the world of goblins to life with vibrant colors and charming character designs. Coupled with a soundtrack that strikes the perfect balance between atmospheric ambiance and catchy tunes, Goblin Stone offers a visual and auditory treat.

Goblin Stone Map

For experienced players, Goblin Stone presents a rich array of strategic possibilities. The game rewards careful planning and tactical execution, allowing veteran players to craft the perfect party composition and adapt to ever-changing circumstances. The breeding system adds an extra layer of depth, allowing players to breed goblins with desired traits to suit their playstyle. This level of customization empowers experienced players to fine-tune their strategies and dominate the battlefield.

On the other hand, Goblin Stone ensures that new players feel welcomed and supported as they embark on their RPG journey. With intuitive mechanics, the game eliminates barriers to entry, allowing newcomers to dive straight into the action. Additionally, the game’s forgiving nature means that mistakes are not overly penalized, allowing new players to learn and grow without fear of failure.

Overall, Goblin Stone is a delightful romp through goblin lore. By placing the power in the hands of these mighty green goblins, there has never been more of a reason to try a new turn-based RPG. Orc Chop Games has made something special here. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a newcomer to the genre, this game is sure to leave a lasting impression. Who knew being a goblin could be this much fun?

Goblin Stone is available now on PC via Steam.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
