It’s not every day we get some new way to dive into the Warcraft universe. This long-storied series from Blizzard Entertainment is full of history, and now you can play meta-on-meta games with its newest entry, Warcraft Rumble. This new real-time strategy-like game made for the modern mobile generation takes its own on the Warcraft story with its own unique gameplay and art style, all with characters that Warcraft fans will love. During an interview with Associate Game Director Adam Kugler and Lead Technical Artist Josue Mariscal, five interesting details about Blizzard’s new game were revealed.
Always online
A big push about Warcraft Rumble is quick gameplay and solo adventures. But that doesn’t mean you can drop in while on a flight or while waiting at the DMV. (Seriously, why does every DMV have awful cell reception)? As a way to lessen the load on development time, a lot of the game is server-based. Meaning, a constant connection is needed to play.
No Pay-To-Win!
While there is an item shop in-game, nothing in it will give someone a major leg up compared to other players. The biggest push is for players to get better at the game by playing it. Every unit is available for purchase through hard work by playing the game, not being exclusive to the item shop. Plus, buying a lot of units may actually be a detriment, as the only way units get better is by actually using them. However, if you want to spend money on this free-to-play game, you can. Packs of figures will be available in the item shop, but the only bonus you get is just having more options. You can’t acquire elite unites this way. There are no plans for a battle pass either, so what is in the store and what is added later is what every person can get.
Lots of TLC
The developers of Warcraft Rumble truly care about what they’ve made. What feels like a passion project oozes respect for one of Blizzard, and gaming’s, longest-running series. Throughout the game, you will find numerous nods to the series that you may not expect. Particularly in the sound design, you’ll find voice lines that show the developers know what they’re doing. Same with enemy encounters and designs of each of the units. Every part of the game is made with love and respect for a game all about pitting little miniatures against each other needs.
Strategy and Variety
As you progress in the game, you will find numerous strategies to try out. The funny thing is, some that you wouldn’t even think about working may actually be overpowered. In other words, experimentation is key to beating the harder challenges. If a unit isn’t working out properly, or you need to change out a unit’s talents, you can. Finding what works best for you for each of the different maps is one of the most fun parts of Warcraft Rumble.
There is fun regardless of how you play
One of the biggest points the developers made was Warcraft Rumble is made to be fun no matter what you do. Regardless of the mode you select or your goal whenever you start the game, from quests to PvP, you will have fun in this game. Plus every portion of the game is made to be long-term aspirational goals. As Adam Kugler said, “There is no need to rush to the end. You can liken it to World of Warcraft. If you’re just hanging out at level 35 and having a good time? Great. The game’s good!” This should excite anyone interested in the game, as it lets you find your fun on your own terms in this handcrafted and fun adventure.
Warcraft Rumble is available to play now on iOS and Android.
