What the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Post-Credit Scene Means for the Series

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Ending But Why Tho 1

Spoiler Warning: This article details the Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie post-credit scene

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie is out this weekend, and you should make sure to sit through the film’s ending credits for the small post-credit scene. While the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 ending feels complete, this isn’t the end to Yuta Okkotsu’s story or rather, to how he impacts the Jujutsu Kaisen world. The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit scene brings viewers to Africa for a small moment. There, we see Okkotsu at a table with former foe Miguel. Then, in walks Gojo, who has a message for Okkotsu, and it looks like it’s time to return.

It’s only a minute-long scene, but it carries a lot of weight for fans of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. If you’re only an anime watcher and looking to fill in the blanks, or if it’s been a while since you’ve read the manga, we’re here to connect the dots for you. While we won’t know what comes to fruition until 2023, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit scene does whet our appetites.

The Shibuya Incident is Closer

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Ending - But Why Tho

There has been some debate amongst Jujutsu Kaisen fans about what Season 2 of the anime will adapt. Right now, anime fans have nearly completed Volume 8. The following parts of the series deal with a series of flashback chapters that look at Gojo and Geto’s time at Jujutsu Tech as students (with some panels directly used in Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie) and introduce Toji Fshijuro. Now, at almost a volume in and of itself, it’s been speculated that this could make up the first cour of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. However, with this end sequence, we see Gojo talking with Okkotsu in Africa, a moment that doesn’t bode well for the kids of Jujutsu Tech. Why not?

Well, you see, the Shibuya Incident Arc is soul-crushing in just about every way. There are deaths and destruction at such a grand scale that I cried at 3 am reading it for the first time. But Okkotsu isn’t in this arc; instead, he comes after completing the arc. By showing this moment in particular, manga readers know precisely what’s coming. While we still don’t know what Season 2 will cover, if Season 1 could cover eight volumes, Season 2 can easily cover the next eight, which would put the series at Okkotsu’s reintroduction. Boom, a post-credits scene that may just tell us what we’re getting in 2023.

The Canon Has Come Full Circle

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Ending But Why Tho 2

When I first watched Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, I was confused by the sleepy boy popping up on the screen. And I was even more confused when Gojo, Megumi, and Todo name-dropped Okkotsu, but we never got to see. Now, it’s clear that MAPPA and Gege Akutami were playing the long game, slowly building up small moments so that when you rewatch the series after Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie or watch the series for the first time, it all feels whole. Surprisingly, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 wasn’t available in an English-translated paperback volume until after Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 was already in full swing. But, in Japan, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was the one-shot from Gege that started it all and led to the serialization of the world in Weekly Shonen Jump. So MAPPA clearly shouldn’t only be praised for stellar animation and fight sequences, but forethought as well.

Season 3 Will Feel Like a Long Wait

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Ending - But Why Tho (3)

This is less of what the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit means and more about what will happen if our prediction is correct. Suppose Okkotsu makes a Season 2 appearance. A whole lot of bad has happened. So while this post-credit scene may seem exciting, it’s also proof that Season 2 will end with a bang. You see, during the 50-plus chapters of the Shibuya incident, a series of unfortunate events led to Yuuji Itadori’s execution coming back on the table. And if you haven’t guessed it, Okkotsu is Itadori’s executioner. Okkotsu has come to give Itadori a reckoning for the harm and deaths of those around him, some of which are the deaths of his friends. Deciding to end Season 2 at Okkotu’s arrival will mean the wait for Season 3 will feel infinitely longer than the year between Season 1 and Season 2.

Whether any of this comes to fruition, only MAPPA and Gege know, but for now, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post-credit sequence is enough to get you excited for 2023.
