The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 25 - But Why Tho

The Daily Life of the Immortal King is a school life/ fantasy donghua (Chinese animation) produced by Bilibili. Having freed the inhabitants of Earth from the ultimate control spell, life now returns to normal for the students of Faction 60. Today, the group gets to visit a local animation studio. But when it’s revealed that the studio may be in trouble, it will be up to Ling and the gang to save the day. Unknown to them, however, there is more at stake than just their favorite cartoons in The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 25.

A show can rarely craft a fluid enough narrative that anything feels possible for the show to present, while never feeling out of place within the world. Yet, every time I think The Daily Life of the Immortal King has taken its narrative as far afield as it possibly could and get away with it, the show demonstrates why I merely talk about tv and don’t make it. The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 25 takes its story past the point of self-awareness as the students discover the joys, struggles, and weight of making an animated cartoon.

What was expected to be a casual class trip to an animation studio swiftly gets derailed when the class’s host, the owner of the company, discovers the director of their current project has gone missing. With the team already behind, the project seems doomed to failure. That is until the owner gets an idea—he’ll have their visiting students take on the role of directors. After all, they are passionate about animation and have just been shown the general process of cartoon creation. As he claims, “Our best directors are our fans.”

Now, if you have ever been in a fandom discussion you already know just how wrong the above statement is. Fans may know what they want, but often have no concept of the work involved in doing it. As one would expect, the situation soon spirals out of control as the ad-hoc directorial team begins to unwittingly make a mess of things.

What may be less expected is the result this has on The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 25‘s world. As the production begins to fall apart, various elements of the show’s visuals begin to falter. Colors are soon lost, and animation eventually breaks down to simply storyboard levels. Before long, Ling must take drastic action to solve the studio’s woes.

As one would assume from the above synopsis, this episode’s visuals take center stage as the show’s look breaks down. Seeing the various steps of cartoon creation fluidly worked into an episode of one of my favorite shows was an unexpected treat. It gives a glimpse into how involved the animation process is, as well as gives some poignant, if comical, portrayals of what animators go through to create our favorite shows.

As this episode began, I was disappointed that it looked like The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 25 would be a diversion from the season’s ongoing plot. And while it is that, I couldn’t be happier for having experienced it. It delivers an unexpected moment of fun and insight that shows off just how hard-working and passionate the animation community is for each and every episode they work on.

The Daily Life of the Immortal King Episode 25 is streaming on Funimation.
