Pokemon Mewtwo Strikes Back - Evolution - But Why Tho

Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution is a remake of Pokemon: The First Movie (1998). If you have not seen either film or are fairly new to the Pokemon franchise, this film not only follows our young heroes, Ash Ketchum, Misty, and Brock but that of the clone Pokemon known as Mewtwo. The adventure starts with a group of scientists trying to find the elusive legendary Pokemon, Mew. Not able to do so, they do however find strands of DNA in a remote jungle. Upon creating Mewtwo, we find the newly born Pokemon questioning why he was created. While the scientists explain what they’ve done, Mewtwo does not accept their answer and sets off to figure out his purpose in life and as a Pokemon.

Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution is a rendition of the original film with a few additional scenes that’s great for all audiences. The CGI is well done and pleasing to the eyes. It takes some time getting used to seeing Ash and gang in 3D animation, but all the Pokemon showcased in this film look amazing. I enjoyed watching battles play out and seeing many of my favorite Pokemon shine.

Although the original voice cast from Pokemon: The First Movie did not return, the voice acting in Mewtwo Strikes Back was decent. I could notice the slight differences in some of the characters’ voices. Brock’s voice is a tad high-pitched and Ash’s is slighter deeper than usual. All that aside, each character’s personality was captured appropriately, even Brock’s thirsty antics when seeing a beautiful girl.

Essentially, watching Evolution is watching Pokemon: The First Movie again but through different lenses. You can see the flaw in Mewtwo’s reasoning for his entire scheme. However, it’s great seeing him learn from his mistakes and find a deeper meaning to life. Although Ash, Misty, and Brock are the main characters and heroes of this adventure, it’s Mewtwo who is the focal point this time. While our heroes don’t have any character development, it’s Mewtwo we grow to love throughout the film.

Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution is a fun time and if you’ve seen the first movie, it hits you in the nostalgic feels. It’s great seeing the original trio of trainers together and all of their beloved Pokemon. The CGI is not perfect, but when watching Pokemon, it’s our favorite monsters we want to see in action, and they are done so beautifully. After all of the action is done and the dust settles, Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution leaves us with an important message about life for all ages.

Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution is now streaming on Netflix
