FIRST IMPRESSIONS: ‘GTFO’ Offers Some Hardcore Screams (PC)

GTFO is a first-person survival horror shooter developed by 10 Chambers Collective, an indie studio from Sweden. Its main premise is very vague in the alpha, as you simply play in a group of four prisoners who are sent down a long dark well with an objective to find the Hydrostasis Unit and then escape the well. The premise of the game seems quite simple, but that’s where you’d be wrong. GTFO‘s mission is intense and at times downright brutal. As you traverse down a long dark well and you hear the panic of your character, tension arises over the body, and that subtle panic begins to onset as well because the fear of the unknown awaits you.

Once you get to your location you and your team are dropped off and sent on your way to figure out how to successfully complete the mission. The map in GTFO is the same static map, but what changes is the enemy spawn patterns. Each time your team is wiped, the map is reloaded and you’re met with a new series of challenges in terms of where the enemies will appear.

You will need to utilize great communication skills. This can be done via a tactical map that you can draw on to give intel, but it would be best to have a third party chat interface like Discord to be able to coordinate more efficiently. I would highly suggest that you play GTFO with a full four-man squad as playing anything otherwise would prove quite difficult, and there aren’t any AI companions to aid you in this current build. So if you don’t have any friends to run with, you’re going to have a much more difficult time than you would with a full team. This is because there are four weapons for each weapon subtype and having a four-man squad means you can have all bases covered. However, if you’re up for the challenge, you can play in smaller groups.

The weapons in GTFO are impactful though but they should be used with caution as you’re quite limited on ammunition. Also, all weapons in GTFO are loud except for your melee weapons. So deciding when to use them is pivotal, as most of the enemies will attack once they hear gunfire, spot your flashlight, or if you are unsuccessful in a stealth kill.

GTFO

So far in the GTFO Alpha, there have been three types of enemies that I’ve come across in my playtime. When you first see them, your character mentions the name, “Sleepers.” Out of those sleepers, there are human-sized Sleepers which upon detection will screech and alert the surrounding sleepers of your presence. Next, are smaller sleepers that crawler on all fours and bite you with their grotesque mouths. Lastly, are giant-sized Sleepers who shoot at you.

Getting into fights isn’t optimal as you are limited in both melee power unless you charge up and can be interrupted, and firepower, because of limited ammo. So if you’re going to get into a fight, it’s best to make it as strategic as possible to have the highest chance of survival.

Overall, I had a fun time playing GTFO and just learning how to play. My team did die a lot, as we were a duo and had to learn a lot by trial and error. I will say that GTFO’s current state in the Alpha was quite stable. I had no crashes or bugs that made my experience less than. My only issue is I wish the Alpha phase lasted longer so I could’ve gotten more time to successfully complete the objective. This game should definitely be on your radar if you’re the type that loves horror games with a strong emphasis on teamwork.

GTFO is stated to be released on PC later this year under Steam’s Early Access program, add it to your wishlist here.
