REVIEW: ‘The Flash’ Season 5, Episode 10 – “The Flash and the Furious”

‘The Flash’ is back with its midseason premiere, "The Flash and the Furious," but will remember the villains after the credits role?

Even after 5 years, I still can’t get used to the month-long break that the CW shows take. The last main episode of The Flash left off with such a cliffhanger. However, because of the annual crossover event, fans had to wait even longer to find out why Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) was visiting the Reverse Flash in prison. It had been highly speculated that Nora was hiding something, but I never knew it would be something so dark. But with the break over, fans will get their answers and will see how Team Flash takes on Cicada (Chris Klein). “The Flash and the Furious” picks up right where episode 8 left off. Nora confronts Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanagh) about him killing Barry’s (Grant Gustin) mother. Team Flash has no luck trying to locate Cicada since their last encounter. Barry, Iris (Candice Patton), and Nora head out to support Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) as she goes back to work.

During Weather Witch’s (Reina Hardesty) trial, a metahuman known as Silver Ghost (Gabrielle Walsh) begins to cause chaos in Central City. Barry and Nora run to deal with her but Barry is immobilized. Meanwhile, Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) is trying to fix Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) issue with his powers, which creates conflict between the two. Also in “The Flash and the Furious”, Sherloque embarks on finding out Nora’s secrets.

For the most part, this was a pretty lackluster way to come back after the winter break. Other than the opening scene with Eobard and Nora, I didn’t particularly care for anything else in “The Flash and the Furious”. The show has added yet another forgettable villain of the week, which didn’t quite help capture my interest. I hope we soon get episodes that mainly focus on dealing with Cicada and the aftermath of Nora trusting Eobard. That seems to be the only thing that the show has going for itself.

That being said, Nora’s arc in this episode seemed a bit forced. Having trust issues from learning about Barry and Eobard’s relationship, she’s quick to judge Weather Witch when she’s trying to build a case during her trial. It makes sense that she would be a bit more cautious, but that doesn’t mean she needed to go overboard. Most of the plot could’ve easily been solved had she been a bit more rational.

Like I stated above, the opening scene is my favorite part of “The Flash and the Furious”. Part of what makes it interesting is that Eobard seems very concerned with Nora figuring out what he did to Barry. It could be all an act just to get Nora to trust her, but I think he genuinely cares for trying to do the right thing. It’ll be interesting to see how all of this plays out, especially with Crisis on Infinite Earths being next year’s annual crossover.

Besides the opening scene, one of the better things about the episode was the side plot between Cisco and Caitlin. It sets up and interesting direction for the show to go. I also like that the show has made an effort to build upon the relationship between Killer Frost and Caitlin. They’ve both become an integral part of the show and I’m overjoyed that there’s some development happening.

I can’t say I really enjoyed “The Flash and the Furious”. There were a few things that caught my attention, but not enough to care for the entire episode. I hope that they start tackling the bigger issues in the next few episodes. So far, this isn’t really much better than the past 2 seasons of the show.

The Flash airs on the CW Network every Tuesday at 5 pm EST / 8 pm PST.

TL;DR

I can’t say I really enjoyed this episode. There were a few things that caught my attention, but not enough to care for the entire episode. I hope that they start tackling the bigger issues in the next few episodes. So far, this isn’t really much better than the past 2 seasons of the show.
