The hardest thing about reviewing really good series weekly is that sometimes it feels like you’re repeating yourself with praise. That said, My New Boss is Goofy not only earns it every week but does so by showcasing different elements of relationships and the path of recovering from workplace abuse. This continues in My New Boss is Goofy Episode 7, “The Shocking Truth!”

In the last episode, Momose confronted his boss and was threatened in the process. Shook by the entire situation, Shirosaki opens his doors and offers to let Momose live with him. Now, in My New Boss is Goofy, Momose is living with Shirosaki, and the duo is adorable. Shirosaki is as absent-minded as ever, but Momose is there by his side to remind him just how many cups of rice he washed.

With domestic bliss, the two become even more comfortable with each other, and Momose finally decides to use this comfort to tell Shirosaki about his former boss, Kurono, properly. From when he first started at the company, how he thought he had to live up to Kurono’s expectations, to the power harassment that worsened daily, Momose tries his best to tell it all. When Momose returns to his apartment for a change of clothes, his fear of Kurono transitions into a dangerous reality when he sees a shadow. And in one moment, he’s transported back to shrinking into himself.

My New Boss Is Goofy Episode 7 - But Why Tho

Every episode of My New Boss is Goofy embraces that recovering from trauma is a journey and one that is more bearable with someone by your side. Despite the constant humor in the series and its use of visual gags as much as dialogue-based ones, the series continues to provide a concise and honest look at how people in power leave lasting scars on us. My New Boss is Goofy Episode 7 shows the audience so much more than we’ve seen of how deeply work affected Momose’s health and how even a phone notification would send him into a panic. But just showing the trauma isn’t enough. The series actually has Momose process it.

Admitting that he has been trying to bury and hide his trauma from Shirosaki, he takes a moment to open up about it deeply. He gets vulnerable, and Shirosaki is there, waiting with a blanket to make him feel safe. As much as it’s cathartic to see Momose stop hiding his pain, it’s the way that his boss is there to hold the burden with him that really makes this episode something special. Shirosaki is clumsy and absent-minded but he is emotionally intelligent in a way that makes those around him all the better.

A slice-of-life workplace comedy, My New Boss is Goofy Episode 7, brought tears to my eyes as much as it made me laugh. The series uses the genre to do the most it can with emotions because it just lets its characters be people first and foremost. The romantic comedy elements are still as present as ever, but for the first time, I’m not asking for romantic confirmation. Seeing this level of emotional connection and support is gorgeous. It’s heartfelt. It means the world.

My New Boss is Goofy is the best anime this season because of its sincerity. A-1 Pictures has tight and emotive animation. The seiyuu brings to life every feeling. Everything about this series and this episode is perfection.

My New Boss is Goofy is streaming now on Crunchyroll.
