REVIEW: ‘Fire Force’ Season 3 Episode 13 — “Unaware”

Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13, “Unaware,” spends its duration catching both Shinra (Gakuto Kajiwara, Romantic Killer) and the audience up on the events that have transpired in Japan during the protagonist’s bizarre journey at the end of the first cour. New questions are raised in this sluggish start to the final run of episodes.

Much of Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 is a jarring mess as Shinra catches up on what has transpired during his revealed absence. Three months have passed since the first pillar appeared, and during that time, Shinra has not behaved normally.

His personality had taken a violent turn and had grown unstable. This is why the other members of Station 8 had to restrain him. Thanks to some special insight from Arthur (Yûsuke Kobayashi, Fire Emblem: Engage), they can confirm Shinra is no longer dangerous and is set free.

Sister Iris is a shining beacon, offering acceptance and forgiveness in an otherwise muddled return.

IRis in Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13

Nearly all of Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 follows Shinra as he learns what has changed with the wider world, as well as what his other self had been up to while he was on his journey. This makes for an exposition-heavy trudge as Shinra catches up with several characters.

Not only does this learning process take up most of the episode, but there are few hard facts to be gained from it, either. Some of the situation’s opacity seems intentional, while other elements are unclear due to inconsistencies that may or may not be intentional. The best example of the latter struggle is the explanation for “Shinra’s” violent behavior during the time jump.

It is eventually concluded that Shinra’s acts, including the physical assault of Sister Iris (Mao Ichimichi, Granblue Fantasy: Relink), were perpetrated by his Adolla Doppleganger. This would seem reasonable since it is established that such possessions can happen; however, these possessions are what cause human combustion in every prior instance.

The exposition in Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 weighs heavily, dragging things out.

Obi and Hinawa in Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13

Maybe this is another manifestation of Shinra’s special connection to Adolla, or a change in the possession process due to the appearance of the pillars, but it feels just as likely that the ultimate explanation will never be known, and it happened this way “just cause.”

Despite all the ill-delivered exposition and confused explanations, Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 does manage to bring some heart with its return. Emotional moments with key characters help elevate the episode beyond its messy conversations. Arthur and Captain Obi each get strong character moments with their returned comrade. But the best connection for Shinra comes with his meeting with Iris.

Despite the violence that passed between them off-camera, Sister Iris is more than willing to accept the explanations about Shinra’s strange turn and move on. As the pair reconnects, Iris confides in her friend about changes in her life, hinting at potential problems ahead.

Despite the episode’s struggles, there is hope that things will go full speed ahead.

Iris in Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13

Iris’s compassion and trust help create an emotional core that shifts the tone of Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 as it nears its conclusion. She has always been a key element of Station 8’s group dynamic, and this moment of bonding reminds us why. This works to both salvage some of this episode and build stakes through the ominous possibilities her experiences may hint at.

The closing moments of Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 step away from Station 8 to herald a new threat that seems likely to strike at one of the group’s few remaining allies. With this implied danger, there’s hope that this episode’s struggles will be a one-of-occurrence, and that the series will now launch headlong into the final run towards the finish.

Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 struggles heavily. Despite some emotional high points, too much of its time is spent on poorly implemented exposition to be called good. But with danger in the wings, hopefully the rough entry is out of the way, and the series will find its stride from here.

Fire Force Season 3 Episode 13 is streaming now on Crunchyroll.
