Netflix aired a package that highlighted upcoming fan-favorite series. Stranger Things, Wednesday, oh, and Squid Game. Sure, it’s about to air tomorrow, so that’s what it’s for, right? But as Bingbang’s T.O.P. says “Bing” to the camera as the purple-haired thanos from Season 2, Squid Game Season 3 flashes on the screen. Well, “Squid Game 3,” to be exact. During the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texas NFL Christmas game, Netflix has been premiering new trailers and teases, as it does during TUDUM broadcasts. But this one takes the cake.

After Season 1, which wasn’t meant to go beyond the self-contained show, became a pop culture phenomenon, Netflix has released a reality show, video game, merch, and countless activations. Proven to be one of the largest crossover hits on the platform for its Korean arm of media, Netflix took the time to remind everyone that Squid Game Season 3 was announced in July 2024. While we don’t know the exact release date, we do know it’s coming in 2025, much sooner than the time between Seasons 1 and 2.

Squid Game Season 3 will follow up tomorrow’s season premiere, and this announcement is sure to get fans excited heading into the new season of the show from writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk. The series sees Kim Ji-yeon and the showrunner serving as executive producers, with Firstman Studio producing the series.

The current released cast list includes: Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Wi Ha-jun (also romanized as Ha-joon), Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo, Yu-ri, Won Ji-an, Lee Seo-hwan, with Gong Yoo.

What to Expected from Squid Game Season 3?

In a letter to fans, showrunner Hwang teased Squid Game Season 3 upcoming plot. Clearing set to follow the quick pace and violence of the first two seasons, Hwang referenced Gi-hun’s mission for revenge on the game in Season 1 and Front Man’s status as a worthy opponent for Gi-Hun.

“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit the end of this story,” Hwang wrote. “We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride.”

What is Squid Game Season 2 about?

Below is the official synopsis from Netflix:

Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind. Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who made history at the 74th Primetime Emmys becoming the first Asian to win Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, once again helms the series as director, writer, and producer. Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo reprise their roles from Season 1 with an impeccable list of new cast members including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an rounding out the ensemble of colorful characters in the new season.

Squid Game Season 3 will be available exclusively on Netflix with a release date in 2025. Squid Game Season 2 is available tomorrow, December 26, 2024.
