We live in an ever-evolving world where sometimes the demands of life get the better of us. There’s a breadth of tasks from various sources that command attention. We try our best to juggle all of these things just to exist and live. At times, it’s to no avail and takes a toll on our quality of life. Mooncube Games addresses the complexities of our everyday life with Spirit City: Lofi Sessions, a gamified focus tool that encourages personal growth.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions combines various methods for setting intentions, goals, and habits. It is primarily a tool with minimal game mechanics. It serves as a supportive, cozy backdrop that helps shorten your to-do list without distractions. Whether you’re new or familiar with productivity applications, the game will help immerse you into a flow state. Earn experience points to create the perfect space and discover friendly spirits to keep you company.

Much of your time is spent idling on screen since you focus on managing other tasks. Minimal interactions are required whether you’re reading, writing, or simply decompressing in your own space. The game’s central perspective is based on your customizable avatar and spirit companion within their room. A crackling fireplace nestles in a corner across a small bookshelf and a vinyl player. While at the center, a bay window stands tall with inviting cushions as raindrops patter the glass. The room is spacious with perfect little nooks for Activities that you can occupy.

Activities enable your avatar to interact with a space. These Activities are aesthetic backdrops and work in tandem to discover Spirit Companions. Spirits are hidden within your room but will only reveal themselves if you engage in the right combinations of sounds, activities, and lighting.

The Spiritdex Book provides clues for luring out all the different spirits, ranging from a Chapterpillar bookworm wearing oversized glasses to a smiley little Kettlebrew teapot. Arachknit, for example, is a yarned spider that appears if the light is low and your avatar engages in knitting as an Activity. When players properly access the right combination, the Spiritdex will begin highlighting. Be patient and remain focused on your goal setting. After a certain amount of time has passed, you will acquire the Spirit.

Spirits Companions are not directly involved in any actions or tasks. They simply enhance the atmosphere. Much like a furry pet companion nesting at your feet or sleeping on your desk, they provide a sense of calm and comfort. It helps with decompression or fostering positive energy geared towards better mental space. As you and your companion work together, the sounds of Lofi beats help to reinforce this positive environment.

Sounds are equally as important as the space you occupy. A library of Lofi music stations with a wide selection of tracks sits at the bottom of the screen. Often described as a perfect pair for any study session or simply to unwind, players are not limited to it. An internal web music browser offers an escape for individuals who prefer different auditory for focus.

The direct link to YouTube is a major game changer that expands the audience and engagement of its players. More simplified sounds like distant thunder, keyboard typing, or white noise are additional soundscapes that can be layered or utilized alone. The game sets the space to explore different combinations to optimize your habits and complete tasks.

From the exploration of sounds to its focus tools, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions has impressive flexibility. The four tools featured are journaling, habit tracking, a timer (Pomodoro Technique), and a to-do list. All are easily viewed and accessible via the main screen. While free writing is an option, the Journal has mindful prompts that curate reflection, gratitude, and optimism. The timer helps to break down large tasks into smaller ones, giving short breaks in between. With these classic tools for success, players explore various ways to integrate all or some of these into their daily practice.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is ideal for individuals who spend significant time at a computer. However, it can still be effective for those who have tasks beyond the screen. Individuals just may miss out on core elements like enjoying their personal, comfy aesthetics and soundscapes. Regardless, its satisfaction begins to dwindle as the limited range of available items hinders momentum for those needing more personalization. The early experience and rewards at the game’s onset serve a crucial purpose. It forms a sense of commitment and habit formation. Once you’ve unlocked everything, hopefully, you’ll be much further in your journey of focus that the externals matter less.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions shows how games can go beyond escapism or entertainment. They possess significant potential to enhance mental health and improve quality of life but are underutilized within this medium. While games often tell us a story, we’re actively shaping our own in real-time with Spirit City: Lofi Sessions.

Sure, the game is not the singular solution to life’s problems, but it can certainly be an asset for anyone seeking more focus and cultivating a better work-life balance. If we can’t control the degrees of our externals, perhaps we can find a way to manage and coexist with them as best we can. By understanding the use of our energy and time, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions reminds us we’re one step forward from where we were yesterday.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is now available on Steam.
