REVIEW: ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch’ Season 3 Episode 8 — “Bad Territory”

Last week’s action-packed episodes gives way to a slower pace in The Bad Batch Season 3 Episode 8. Clone Force 99 begins to understand why the Empire is so determined to capture Omega. However, they still have much to learn before returning to Mount Tantiss. Hunter is determined to unravel this mystery, but not at the risk of Omega’s safety. Learning about what an M-Count is is important, but not at the expense of a member of their squad. Thus, Hunter and Wrecker set out to find a beloved bounty hunter. Meanwhile, Omega helps Crosshair in confronting some tough realizations.

Before Hunter and Wrecker can investigate the M-Count in “Bad Territory,” they require a lead. Fortunately, throughout the series, Clone Force 99 has cultivated valuable and resourceful allies. One such ally is the liberator of ancient wonders herself, Phee Genoa. While her appearance serves as a painful reminder of Tech’s absence, this season has adeptly reintroduced characters and plot threads from previous seasons. To catch viewers up, Crosshair’s absence facilitates the seamless inclusion of exposition, making it feel necessary rather than heavy-handed.

Wrecker and Hunter set out to gather more information about the M-Count situation based on Phee’s intel. Clone X Troopers aren’t the only ones still looking for people like Omega. So are the bounty hunters. This leads them to Fennec Shand. Unsurprisingly, Shand refuses to provide the information without a price. The duo must first complete a dangerous bounty for Shand. She emphasizes that they are not allies but working for her. This situation feels all too familiar for Wrecker and Hunter, as they find themselves once again carrying out someone else’s dirty work. Amidst this hunt, fans are treated to a glimpse of a new planet, along with fresh vehicle and creature designs, highlighting the ongoing richness of the Star Wars universe despite its storied history.

Further, their mission with Shand highlights to Hunter and Wrecker the potential lives they could have led. Similar to how Crosshair saw himself in CX-2, it becomes clear that Hunter and Wrecker possess exceptional hunting skills. Hunter’s tracking abilities and instincts, combined with Wrecker’s demolition skills and fearlessness in battle, could easily make them formidable bounty hunters. Being cloned from the renowned bounty hunter Jango Fett, with a few genetic modifications, certainly helps. However, as their story unfolds, it becomes increasingly evident that Clone Force 99 cannot simply bury their heads in the sand or live a mercenary life. Their true purpose remains uncertain, but one thing is for sure: Clone Force 99 will not go down without a fight.

Meanwhile, Omega and Crosshair work to identify the cause of Crosshair’s hand shaking, which affects his sniper skills. They realize it’s an internal issue in his mind, something he must address himself. Omega straightforwardly suggests, “Maybe you’re the one who has to fix it.” This brief moment of The Bad Batch Season 3 Episode 8 carries significant weight. Despite his return to the Bad Batch, donning his modified original armor, and gaining acceptance from Clone Force 99 and other rogue clones, Crosshair grapples with self-doubt and darkness.

Like Crosshair, overcoming the darkness of self-doubt remains challenging despite having a fulfilling life and support from loved ones. It’s powerful to witness Crosshair begin to confront his struggles, illustrating the importance of therapy and self-reflection. While Omega provides support, the ultimate responsibility lies with Crosshair to overcome his mental blocks. For my own mental health, I am eager to see Crosshair’s continued journey and his eventual triumph over his inner demons. If Crosshair can persevere, why can’t I?

Some might chalk up The Bad Batch Season 3 Episode 8 as a filler episode. Admittedly the plot moves very little compared to previous weeks. However, the conversations shared between Omega and Crosshair make for my favorite moments of the season. Art has the power to evoke emotions, and that’s precisely what “Bad Territory” did for me. Director Nate Villanueva and writer Matt Michnovetz offer viewers plenty to contemplate, especially for those on their own journey of self-discovery and recovery.

The Bad Batch Season 3 Episodes 8 are streaming exclusively on Disney+, with new episodes every Wednesday.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
