Comedy is a large genre that often manages to pull off big emotion swings, and it has to in order to be truly good. You see, comedy works because it empathizes with the viewer and knows how to make us laugh, how to feel something more than just the characters on the screen and connect. For the Top Comedy Movies of 2022 we included everything from a video game adaptation to a parody biopic and cathartic looks at the upper-class.
Still, we also looked at dark stories about friendship and one particular film about sex, love, and finally breaking out of your shame. If you want to see how diverse the genre is, check out our top comedy movies of 2022 list below. But first, ground rules.
To make our Top Comedy Movies in 2022 list, the film had to have had a release available to Unites States audiences in the calendar year of 2022. That means festival films that have not come out in theaters or on digital platforms can’t make the Top Comedy Movies of 2022 list. Additionally, films that had delay after delay despite being screened at festivals in 2021 could. Additionally, like horror, comedy is a broad genre and we didn’t discriminate against hyphenate films or dark comedies for this list, admit it: Banshees of Inirsherin made you belly laugh. So, without further ado, here are our Top 15 Comedy Movies of 2022.

“Triangle of Sadness is a movie that has to be seen to be believed, mainly due to the absurd chain of events that take place during its runtime. Some may love it and some may hate it, but I can’t deny that it was an engrossing watch. Just do yourself a favor and don’t eat anything before you see it. You’ll thank me later.”
10. Confess, Fletch
Director: Greg Mottola
Writer: Greg Mottola, Zev Borow, Gregory McDonald (based on the novel by)
Stars: Jon Hamm, Caitlin Zerra Rose, Roy Wood Jr., Ayden Mayeri, Lorenza Izzo
Where to Watch:
“Confess Fletch is a lot of fun, effortlessly funny, and let’s be real Jon Hamm needs more comedic roles. If you’re looking for a movie to laugh with and at this one is for you. Similarly, if you’re hard up for a whodunnit, this is, well, also for you. Much more than I expected, Confess Fletch shows that the right project, with the right people, even after years of production hell can finally bring a concept to fruition even great than when it was originally imagined.”
9. Fire Island
Director: Andrew Ahn
Writer: Joel Kim Booster
Stars: Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, Torian Miller, Tomas Matos
Where to Watch:
” Every bit of Fire Island exceeds expectation and presents an unapologetic queer story that sees joy, friendship, romance, and all the ills that come with them. It’s safe to say that Fire Island will find itself in the halls of rom-com as one of the most iconic, and I hope there are more to come from Ahn and Booster. Fire Island is queer joy above all else.”

“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story does precisely what it’s advertised to do. The film promises laugh-out-loud antics, resulting in the best kind of stupid humor. Daniel Radcliffe is definitely enjoying himself post-child stardom, and we’re all here for it. Ultimately, treat Weird for what it is; a parody about a parody song singer, and you’ll enjoy the hell out of it”
7. Ticket To Paradise
Director: Ol Parker
Writer: Ol Parker, Daniel Pipski
Stars: George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Kaitlyn Dever, Maxime Bouttier, Billie Lourd
Where to Watch: Peacock
“Add in the fact that both Clooney and Roberts have moments to give genuine emotional performances while looking back on their love and former marriage, and Ticket to Paradise is wonderful. Even with its faults, this film is charming and loving. George Clooney and Julia Roberts together again, a beautiful setting and humor that works nearly perfectly, Ticket to Paradise are worth the price of admission.”

“Easily one of the best films of the year, The Menu manages to be just as hilarious as it is aggressive. The laughs help the critique go down well and show that satire doesn’t need to be subtle, but can rather blow a door open and still succeed. Sharp, cruel, and cathartic, The Menu is sublime.”

Where to Watch: Paramount+
“Sonic The Hedgehog 2 supercharges the best parts of the first film while adding fan-favorite characters and diving deep into the lore of the video games. With a third film and a spinoff TV series for Knuckles in the works, the Blue Blur is one of the few video game characters who can hold down a successful film franchise. Sonic fans should definitely consider buying tickets if they haven’t already, and parents will have a nice option for family movie night.”
2. The Banshees of Inisherin
Director: Martin McDonagh
Writer: Martin McDonagh

Where to Watch: HBO Max
“At first, the film starts as a simple comedy: two friends fall out, and you think, “Oh, it’s only a matter of time until they patch things up.” But McDonagh isn’t interested in an easy resolution. And despite Colm’s insistence that he just doesn’t like Pádraic anymore, there’s a deeper reason behind his decision to cut off their friendship. Colm has fallen into a depression regarding his own mortality and is resolved to make a better life for himself; Pádraic just doesn’t fit into that life.”
1. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande
Director: Sophie Hyde
Writer: Katy Brand
Stars: Emma Thompson, Daryl McCormack
Where to Watch: Hulu
“Good Luck To You, Leo Grande is a sweetly vulnerable look at what sex can mean for people and how the intimacy experienced physically can extend to emotional relationships and growth…There is joy in this film and understanding, but above all else a push to accept yourself the way you are.”
