Platinum End is a dark fantasy shonen anime produced by Signal.MD. With the entire world discovering the truth about the God Candidates in the last episode, Mirai’s team is now desperate to find the candidates and end the competition before others can find and misuse them. They already have their sights set on one potential candidate, but talking them into helping maybe a bit of a trick in Platinum End Episode 17.
The bulk of this week’s story focuses on Mirai and Saki as they interact with the newest god candidate they have discovered. While not an active threat like Metropoliman, this candidate may provide some philosophical frustrations for our lead duo. This intellectual conflict stems from the individual’s unique, pro-suicide opinions.
While I strongly disagree with this new character’s feelings about suicide, I was surprised by how unique and well thought out their arguments are. The viewpoint makes some interesting logical arguments concerning humanity and how we interact with, as well as judge others through the lens of our desires. This conversation dominates Platinum End Episode 17‘s plot in a way that makes the episode easily as engaging as a much more action-oriented outing. The conversation helps to remind us about just how much of morality is built entirely on our points of view. It is always interesting to see new perspectives about moral issues, even if I find myself completely opposed to them.
Once the moral debate subsides, Mirai and Saki turn their attentions toward gathering the other God Candidates in the hopes of finding a peaceful resolution to the question of who will become the next God. With two other candidates already known, the duo sets out to make contact with them first. Meanwhile, the search continues for the final candidate that remains unknown to anyone. Given the brief glimpses the show has given viewers of this final candidate and how they appear to feel about the entire competition, I’m left wondering just how the show will manage to bring her into contact with everyone else.
The visual presentation of Platinum End Episode 17 delivers this dialogue-driven narrative to the viewer skillfully. While it never does anything extraordinary, it brings each moment to the viewer in a way that makes the back and forth conversations, as well as brief location hoping, in a way that is always clear and easy to follow along with.
When all is said and done, Platinum End Episode 17 manages to dive into some interesting philosophical territory while not losing the viewer with overly long or boring dialogue. The episode showcases how the series can entertain through its sometimes thoughtful narrative just as well as it can with its tense confrontations.
