REVIEW: ‘Lucifer’ Season 6 Ends with a Thud

Lucifer Season 6, the last season of the Netflix original show, was just released on September 10th. Season 5B concluded with Lucifer (Tom Ellis) winning the war against his twin brother, Michael, and earning the title of God. Lucifer season 6 focuses on Lucifer coming to terms with what being God is. Chloe (Lauren German) has given up everything in her life to be with Lucifer once he takes on his new role but has a hard time accepting what this all will mean for her. Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) and Eve (Inbar Lavi) are busy making plans for their wedding. Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) continues on his path to becoming an LAPD officer by starting out at the academy. Ella (Aimee Garcia) begins to suspect that Lucifer may actually be who he claims to be and not just a method actor. Dan (Kevin Alejandro) deals with trying to remember what he feels guilty about in order to deal with it and ascend to Heaven. Also, the arrival of Rory, (Brianna Hildebrand), a mysterious stranger with a personal connection to Lucifer and Chloe, will change their lives forever.

Lucifer Season 6 returned to the roots of the show and focused on Lucifer and Chloe’s relationship. Going from partners to a couple in a relationship, they have made great progress in being together. Season 6 is in itself a love letter to their relationship, letting fans know just how important the pairing of these two characters has been since the start of the show. The chemistry that Ellis and German have has had years to fully develop and now their characters have proven that they do belong together. Even though they both have individual arcs they must deal with, they are tied together in a way that doesn’t make it feel like a co-dependent relationship. They’re both their own characters but never completely lose themselves while being together. However, it’s a shame that they couldn’t continue to solve murders throughout this season. They were able to solve one final case but it wasn’t in the usual manner. On top of this, the final moments that they share on-screen were incredibly rushed. They spent many seasons being a “will-they-won’t-they” couple only to finally start a relationship. The ending completely undermines the journey and progress that they made.

An integral part of Lucifer has always been the allies that the titular character has managed to make during his stay in Los Angeles. While the first season focused heavily on his partnership with Chloe, the later seasons focused on his relationships with his friends. The series was able to find ways to find all its characters meaningful storylines while never taking away from the central protagonists. Lucifer Season 6 aimed to continue this but lacked in certain areas. Maze and Eve were given proper development and never once felt rushed. By the end of the series, fans of those characters will certainly feel like they were the best coupling besides Lucifer and Chloe.

Dan’s arc was rather interesting, given that he died at the end of the previous season. However, the show found an interesting way to make sure his character had a memorable and emotional ending. However, it would have meant so much more had he not been killed off so early. Dr. Linda (Rachael Harris), someone who has been such an important person in Lucifer’s life, made few appearances this season. Her prominent appearance was in the latter half of Season 6, which felt rather strange. Had the season been given more episodes, or found ways to condense certain arcs to make things flow more smoothly, all other characters would’ve been given proper endings.

Rory was an interesting addition to Lucifer Season 6. Given her mysterious past and even more mysterious connection to Lucifer and Chloe, it will surely keep fans on the edge of their seats. The angst and hatred that she has for Lucifer adds an even bigger mystery to her character. Given the themes of worthiness and responsibilities that Lucifer Season 6 focuses on, her arrival was imminent. However, it took a bit too long for the show to reveal her true intentions. Her arc could have been fleshed out more had the reveal been made earlier rather than at the end of the fourth episode. By then, it would make sense for fans to figure out who she is and the importance she plays in the lives of the two central characters. But on a more positive note, the chemistry that Hildebrand has with Ellis is incredible. The scenes they share are full of emotion and they will surely give fans a clear perspective as to why Rory hates Lucifer so much.

A major element since the start of the series has been the work that Lucifer and his allies have done with the LAPD. At the end of last season, it’s revealed that Dan put Amenadiel’s application into the Police Academy. Amenadiel made the decision to honor his friend’s final act and became an officer. In Lucifer Season 6, an episode is dedicated to Amenadiel’s first day as an officer and confronting the racist police detective that harassed him back in Season 4.

While the episode has a significant theme that relates to the Black Lives Matter movement, it feels out of place in a show that’s never made the effort to include anything in regards to race. There’s been only 1 other episode that has dealt with issues in regards to race but it never really amounted to anything. With this being the final season, and putting more focus on Lucifer and Chloe, the episode should have been included earlier in the series. Had Amenadiel been given this arc sooner, it would have given his character much more depth than just being associated with Lucifer and his son.

Ultimately, Lucifer Season 6 provided emotional moments for its two central characters, a great mystery for Rory, and great endings for certain characters. However, it lacked in the way other characters were treated, including an episode that never really had anything to do with what the show was about, and deciding to rush certain aspects of the relationships. Having finished the show, and remembering the campaign to save the show after it was canceled during Season 3, it’s disappointing to see how the series ended. Relying heavily on Lucifer and Chloe’s relationship would have been enough but they show had previously done an incredible job at fleshing out the rest of the characters. The ending tried to invoke heavy emotions, but even with including one of My Chemical Romance’s greatest ballads, it wasn’t enough to feel like a worthy ending.
