Star Wars Visions Episode 3, “The Twins” is the episode of Star Wars: Visions that I have been waiting for since the announcement of the series. In a hyper-colored Promare-glory, studio TRIGGER puts their stamp on the franchise both aesthetically and by using a common element like siblings to great effect.

Star Wars Visions Episode 3 is animated by studio TRIGGER, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, and written by Hiromi Wakabayashi and features music from Michiru Oshima. At 16-minutes, “The Twins” uses every second of its runtime. Obviously, this episode is about a pair of twins whose relationship comes to a head when one of them betrays the other. The twins, Karre (Neil Patrick Harris) and Am (Alison Brie) may be a force dyad that we’ve seen in the past, namely with Luke and Leia, but they stand on their own.
Through gorgeous fights sequences and heist elements, TRIGGER has crafted – through their iconic style – an aesthetic feast that uses the beauty of the sith black and red. For the bulk of the short, Black, red, and white make up the animation, but as the acts progress and more is revealed we see more color work its way into the frame. The vibrancy hits you and it allows the finale of the short to hit even harder as red turns to purple and a loud blue blast through the screen.
Elements from old and new Star Wars stories are used as homage but executed with a uniqueness and nuance that makes Star Wars Visions Episode 3 feel new and bright both from an aesthetic and storytelling perspective. While the beauty of the short is what fans of TRIGGER have come to expect after BNA or Kill La Kill or Promare, the studio use classing Star Wars elements to blend their animation with the larger universe. The main way is through the use of blueprints that fit that minimalistic black screen with solid colored lines. Additionally though, the orchestral score that brings immediate tension and relief and feels like you’re listening to John William’s compositions.
The vibrancy of the “The Twins” is stunning and the use of shadow and outlines is a signature beauty that Trigger is known for. Sharp reds that turn pink and then pruple as they hit and blend with aquas. But to add even more, the story in this short nails a three act structure while also pushing you to think about what is happening to Karre and Am after the credits roll.
