‘ARK: Aquatica’ Reimagines Survival Beneath The Waves

In a hands-off preview session with Matt Kohl, lead developer at Snail Games, we got a deep dive into ARK: Aquatica—a bold new DLC celebrating ten years of ARK: Survival Evolved. Designed as both a tribute and a reinvention, this underwater expansion offers a completely submerged survival experience that reimagines the series’ core systems and opens the door to new players while giving longtime fans something unexpected.

Set in a fully submerged and corrupted ARK that crash-landed deep within the Atlantic Ocean, ARK: Aquatica is far more than a biome reskin. This expansion drops players into a world shaped by rifts of Element. It’s dangerous, beautiful, and surprisingly approachable—especially for returning players or those experiencing ARK for the first time.

Players awaken on Aquatica, a damaged ARK whose systems failed to purge corruption. The result is a visually stunning, perilous underwater labyrinth composed of five massive biomes, each with unique threats, ecosystems, and mechanical challenges. Currents, crushing pressure, and environmental instability force players to rethink everything they know about crafting, movement, and survival.

“We wanted this to feel like a brand-new ARK,” Kohl explained during the demo. “Not just a side map, but something players could completely lose themselves in. You’re not visiting the ocean—you’re surviving it.”

That philosophy is built into every layer of ARK: Aquatica. The early biomes are intentionally designed to be more forgiving, offering a family-friendly starting area for newcomers. It’s a design change that gives ARK: Aquatica an easy onboarding curve without stripping away the series’ signature intensity. For returning players, it’s a welcome shift from the brutal first steps of the original ARK, making the water-based gameplay feel far more inviting.

ARK: Aquatica Environment

New survival mechanics transform how players move, build, and fight, including deployable TEK air pockets, lead boots, and the need to manage buoyancy and water pressure. Base-building has also been reimagined through a pearl-based construction system that supports floating platforms and grounded architecture.

The DLC introduces 17 new creatures, all adapted to or influenced by deep-sea life and elemental corruption. There’s the mystical Monodon for long-distance travel, the protective Mudpuppy, and numerous mutated variants of classic creatures, now evolved for aquatic combat. “We looked at real-world biology and tried to twist those ideas into ARK’s sci-fi ecosystem,” said Kohl.

ARK: Aquatica is the first non-canonical DLC in the franchise’s history, allowing the team to push the boundaries of ARK’s established lore. Its story features two brand-new characters and explores the origin of Element, tying into broader mysteries across the series while keeping the narrative accessible for newcomers. “Long-time players will find new threads connecting everything together,” Kohl said, “while new players won’t feel lost coming in.”

With 60 new engrams, 10 aquatic-themed cooking recipes, and a completely retooled gameplay loop, ARK: Aquatica offers plenty of variety, from pressurized combat to kelp-based cuisine. Even movement and traversal are different, with underwater navigation requiring new strategies and gear.

ARK: Aquatica celebrates a decade of ARK: Survival Evolved.

ARK: Aquatica Dark Environment

The expansion’s challenge ramps up quickly. ARK: Aquatica is home to some of the series’ most dangerous creatures, especially within its abyssal zones. Light is scarce, and oxygen is a constant concern. Every moment spent in the depths increases the stakes. “There’s a level of pressure—literal and emotional—that you don’t get on land,” said Kohl. “That’s what makes it exciting.”

ARK: Aquatica will also feature limited-time official server support, allowing multiplayer fans to collaborate, build, and explore together. Whether you’re working with a tribe or forging your own path, the expansion offers meaningful content for all playstyles.

As a celebration of ARK’s decade-long evolution, ARK: Aquatica feels like the perfect anniversary gift that honors the past and pushes the game into new territory. It’s equal parts nostalgic and forward-thinking, offering a biome that feels radically different while still capturing the essence of what makes ARK so enduring.

Whether you’re a seasoned survivor or returning after years away, ARK: Aquatica invites players to breathe deep, dive in, and experience ARK in a way they never have before.

ARK: Aquatica is scheduled to release June 2025.

I am just a guy who spends way to much time playing videos games, enjoys popcorn movies more than he should, owns too much nerdy memorabilia and has lots of opinions about all things pop culture. People often underestimate the effects a movie, an actor, or even a video game can have on someone. I wouldn’t be where I am today without pop culture.
