5 books to read while social distancing

A lot of people are not sure what to do with so much time on their hands at the moment. However,  many people have discussed rekindling their love for reading. Here are my top five books to read while social distancing!

The  Shining by Stephen King

Stephen King, The Shining, Horror Books

This may seem like a very odd choice. However, I use horror as a coping mechanism and to exert a sense of control in these trying times. This classic horror tale follows the Torrance family as they relocate to The Overlook Hotel. However, this chance to grow tighter as a family starts to diminish as they realize that not everything is what it seems. The Shining is a dark, itching story for those looking to feel less crazy than our protagonists.  Warning, this may not be an ideal book to read while social distancing for most since it does explore the concept of cabin fever.

Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff

SSDGM. Stay Sexy and Dont Get Murdered, My Favorite Murder

This book is written by the two leading ladies of the popular Comedy/True Crime podcast, My Favorite Murder. This book is drenched in their comedic timing and feels like you are listening to an actual episode. While true crime weaves this narrative together, the book explores the growth and struggles of both of these strong women. It is as reflective as it is funny. If you are looking for an introspective book to read while social-distancing, but still want to have fun, this is the book for you.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

A Game of Thrones, Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin

I have been indulging in the A Game of Thrones audiobook narrated by Roy Dotrice. His brisk and deep voice sweeps you away to Martin’s highly-descriptive universe of Westeros. Told from multiple points of view, it is a slow-building political drama riddled with betrayal, murder, sword fights, and magic. Its high fantasy backdrop is thoroughly immersive and easy to listen to while cooking, playing Animal Crossing, or doing other hobbies. There is a slew of amazing characters to instantly grow attached to. With its quick chapters, it’s easy to breeze through.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy

This is a personal favorite novel of mine. Tolstoy explores love, passion, and life with Anna Karenina. We watch as Anna, a privileged woman during Imperial Russia, cheats on her husband with the ever-so handsome Count Vronsky. This turns their lives upside down as this affair rips apart their social circles. They both flee to Italy in hopes that they will be able to live the rest of their lives happily. With incredible description and heartfelt emotion pouring out of every page, this novel truly is a work of art that will make you think about what you would do and endure for happiness and love.

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Read while social distancing

The first Percy Jackson book is a lot of fun with its integration of Greek mythos in the real world. A purely indulgent read, you do not need to think too hard to enjoy the adventures of one of the most kindhearted, friendly YA protagonists. It follows the story of Percy, who is a child of Poseidon. He goes to Camp Half Blood to be around others like him called demigods. What ensues is a wild adventure between him and the friends he has made, Annabeth (daughter of Athena) and Grover (a Satyr and Percy’s best friend). At a little bit past 350 pages, it is a fast-paced book that will make you want to fall in love with Greek mythology all over again.

I approached my picks of books to read while social distancing to encompass a multitude of different readers. From horror to fantasy, to romance, to Young Adult, I hope you can find the perfect pick for your mood. All of these books can be ordered through Bookshop to support local bookstores.
